Cinquefoil is a large group which contains several species of shrubby plants with foliage and flowers. “Cinquefoil” stands for “five leaves,” although the number of leaves attached to the stem may be about three to seven. The length of the leaves is about an inch and densely set on the branches. Bush Cinquefoils that are grown as bushes are 2-4-ft shrubs which are grown as they have flowers that are five petaled. The flowers of the plant are usually an inch big and come in various shades and combinations of yellow, red, orange and pink.

The flowering season of the Cinquefoil Plants is long when compared to other shrubs due to which they can be seen everywhere during the early days of summers and gradually the flowers reduce until they get over by winter completely. fruticosa is usually chosen when wanting to use it as border which have mixed type of shrubs while hybrids that form clumps such as ‘Gibson’s Scarlet’ are most excellent for permanent borders and rock gardens. They look best when several plants are set in a group.

Cinquefoil can be sown from seeds which have been put in containers in a cold frame during winters or spring. The cuttings of the Greenwood are usually taken at the end of spring or starting of summers so that when a plant gets mature taken in late spring or early summer, and mature plants can be divided in fall or spring. Cinquefoil has a habit to creep. The stem of cinquefoil creeps on the ground. The stem of this plant can go as high as 5 ft in length. The leaves are marked by hairy veins. There are 5 or7 smaller leaflets on each long stalk. The flowering season of the Cinquefoil is from May to August and it has bright yellow beautiful flowers. Cinquefoil contains resins, starch, chlorine, amino acid minerals, red pigment, and vitamin c.

Cinquefoil can be sowed in either early autumn or early spring. They should be sown from 20 to 45 cm apart. The type of soil that is best suited to grow Cinuefoil is sandy which is a bit acidic to neutral and whose pH ranges from 5 to 7. Ideally they should be grown in an area where there is lots of sunlight but it should also be shady during the afternoons. The seeds take from two to four weeks to germinate, and after that the seedlings need to be transferred into the garden either at the start of autumn or before the last frost of spring. The best time to harvest and collect cinquefoil is in the month of June. While they were collected all that had been eaten by insects or which had become discolored were discarded and only whole and parts that are not damaged are kept. The whole plant is also uprooted many times.

It used to be used by people as folk way of treatment to treat fevers and other problems that was related to it. It is due to the tannic acid that is present in the extracts of the Cinquefoil that helps to stop bleeding. It is used to reduce the pain of tooth. Cinquefoil root bark helps to stop bleeding from nose, traditionally it was used to treat diarrhea and related digestive problems.

Cinquefoil is also consumed as a vegetable in Europe and other places. The little leaves of the cinquefoil can be minced or chopped and used as salad or cooked with many types of foods or even eaten without being cooked. Since there are no side effects associated with the use of the cinquefoil, the remedies may be used safety
