The Coreopsis is a Perennial and its botanical name is also Coreopsis. The name “Coreopsis” is derived from a Greek word “Koris. It also has a nickname “Tickseed” because of the resemblance of the seeds to the ticks. Coreopsis is considered by many gardeners to be one of the best natives’ of wild flowers. They are of great addition to any garden design thus a favorite of gardeners. The flower of coreopsis is bright like a daisy and very attractive. The height of these perennial plants varies with species. Generally the height ranges from nine inch to three feet. These perennial flowers bloom in shades of yellow, orange, pink and even in a combination of these colors. Coreopsis has a strong stem and thus does not require staking. The blooming season of the Coreopsis plant is throughout the summers.

The plant grows best in light sandy as well as loamy soil but requires the soil to be well drained. Apart from this the plant grows well in acid, neutral and alkaline soil. The Coreopsis can not only grow in the shade but can also tolerate medium to full sun. The Coreopsis can also resist drought. As it can tolerant drought the Coreopsis can be planted near the road or mail box where it cannot get water every day.
There is no such difficulty or hassle in planting Coreopsis. In order to grow them the seeds are sown directly in the garden during the early spring. Generally the seeds are covered with coarse or sandy soil. The seeds germinate in about one to two weeks, until then it should be seen that the soil is moist. While planting the seeds it should be kept in mind that between the two plants there must be a space of about twelve inches. The coreopsis takes approximately sixty days to grow after planting.
The Coreopsis can be used for different things like it is an excellent plant to be planted in wild gardens or meadows, as beds or borders, as cut flowers as well as dried flowers. The flowers of the Coreopsis is also used for decorating baskets and also as edging plants. Another use of these flowers is that they provide us with a yellow dye which can be used to dye or color clothes.
Apart from this the Coreopsis can also be used as tea for drinking by drying these plants. This use is so extensive that in many cities it is even used as the substitute of coffee. But these perennial plants do not provide much of a helping hand in the medical field. The roots of these plants are used in the treatment of diarrhea.
The Coreopsis plants mostly have thin and ferny leaves and do not usually live for more than two to three years. Coreopsis produce daisy like flower which are hermaphrodite which means it has both male and female organ. The Coreopsis flowers are pollinated by the bees and other insects and they are also well-known for attracting wild life.
