Planting Daylilies “Beauty for the Day”

Daylilies are one among the number of plants which belong to the family of Hemerocalidaceae. The name Daylily is very apt for this flower as it opens during the day. Although they are commonly known as Daylilies they are not Lilies in the true sense. The scientific name for the Daylilies is Hemerocalis. This is a Greek word which means “beauty for a day” .The name suits  the flower well as each flower that blooms generally  do not last for more  than a day, but many people do not realize this that as each clump has many stalks and each stalk has lots of flower buds. This is the reason it ca produce flowers for many weeks. Apart from this there are some varieties also which bloom for the second time in one season.

The origin of the flower can be traced back to Asia. Earlier they came in just yellow, red and orange color but now they are available in many different vibrant colors. There are many varieties of Daylilies than can be eaten. There are certain species whose flowers are prized very highly when they are used in Chinese cooking. The unopened pods and the tuber roots can also be included as a source of food. The flower has three petals and three sepals which are known as tepals. The most hybridized flower for the garden can be said to be Daylilies as it cross over 1000 new hybrids in a year. The Daylilies has the capacity to bear extreme climatic conditions like the heat of summers and the chill of winters.

Taking care of Daylilies is not difficult. The amount of water required is little and they are disease resistant and very few pests can feed on their flowers so we can say they are also pest resistant. It has been seen that although aphids sometimes feed of the flowers of the daylilies they can be got rid of by the use of insecticides soap spray .The soil where it will grow should be well drained. In order to make the soil healthy and full of nutrients, manure and compost should be added annually. The Daylilies require a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight everyday and if it gets less then it grows leaves that are large and very few flowers. The soil for planting Daylilies should be a little acidic, with organics mater base and high humus. In order to raise the acidity before planting the soil needs to be tiled little and then fertilizers should be added. In order to retard the seed production and ensure greater amount of flowers for the next season the flower heads of the spent flowers should be pinched off after it blooms.

There are many Daylilies which grow only in a particular location and not outside. The best way to choose a Daylily crown would be to be going to a local nursery and check it out what type of day lilies would grow best in the area we wish. As the Daylilies come in a large variety of colors and sizes it can be used beautifully for garden landscapes. There are about 35,000 different varieties of Daylilies which can be named.

The life span of Daylilies can be for decades. In order to make sure that they live long it is to be seen that the rots get enough space to spread and they are not planted very close to the trees. Planting it close by to a tree limits the growth of the lilies in different ways like the root of the tree will come in the way of the root of the daylilies, and the shade of the tree will also hamper the growth of the daylilies.
