The place which should be chosen to grow the Lilacs should be like the hill sides or where there is no chance for the water to accumulate.

Lilacs are planted in the home gardens for their fragrant flowers as well as their beauty. There are about 20-25 species of Lilacs of many vibrant colors on the whole and each color Lilac symbolizes something. The innocence of the youth is represented by the white flowering varieties and the purple flowered Lilacs represent the first love. The state flower of New Hampshire is the common Lilacs as it represents the nature of the people of that area who are able to survive under any sort of unfavorable conditions.

The most common varieties that are found in the nurseries and home gardens are the French Lilac and the Common Lilac though there are several other types of varieties. The easiest and the fastest way to get a Lilac bush that is blooming are by buying a young Lilac plant from a nursery. A Lilac plant takes about two to three years to have its first burst of beautiful fragrant flowers. Getting a Lilac plant to bloom from seeds is not easy and a person has to wait for four or five years before the plant actually blooms. Another way of getting Lilac plant is by transplanting the shoots in the home garden. The shoots should be transplanted in the early spring .as that time the weather is cool. The Lilac plant needs cool weather and not hot dry weather for its growth.

Lilacs can be enjoyed for a long time or for many years as they are plants which are hassle free and do not require much attention. Pruning of the Lilacs should be avoided as the maximum number of flowers that grow on the plant is produced on the older wood on the Lilac bushes, but snipping off the dead flowers is good for the health of the Lilac plant. Lilacs are prone to a powdery mildew so if that is seen on the plant then it should be dusted sulphur powder and a bit of pruning can also be done around the plant in order to improve the air circulation of the Lilac plant.

The soil where the Lilac is planted should be a wet one but on thing that has to be borne in mind is that water does not log there. The Lilacs need to be given fertilizers which are rich in phosphorous once a year during the spring as this type of fertilizer helps the Lilac plant to bloom. Fertilizers that have high nitrogen should be avoided as such fertilizers do not promote the blooming of the flowers but growth of   leaves and other parts of the plant. Another way to promote the blooming is by spreading the ashes around the base of the Lilac plant that has been collected from the fireplace.
