As the name suggests Ornamental grasses mean grasses that is used for decorative purpose or for the beautification of landscape or a home garden. The Ornamental grasses are perennials that come in different varieties. As different types of varieties grow during different seasons they work as fillers for the gardens. As they come in ample of varieties and caring for them is easy, the ornamental grasses are one of the favorites to be used as a landscape.

In order to grow Ornamental grasses in the garden the soil needs to be prepared before hand. In fact if the soil has been tilled properly during the winters, the soil freeze as well as thaw well which is a great help while planting the grass during spring which is its season time. The soil of the area where they will be planted also needs to be tilled in spring. The area where the ornamental grass shall be planted should have good drainage. When preparing a little fertilizer which is enough to cover the area should be tilled into the soil.
Planting of Ornamental grasses can be done during spring or during winters. The best time to plant the grass would be spring as by the time the winter sets in the plant can get enough time for its roots to be firmly planted in the soil. They need to be planted in deep holes in which they grew earlier. The hole needs to be filled properly with potting soil from all around and watered immediately. Ornamental grasses do not require soil that is very highly fertile. Through the color of the leaves the nitrogen level of the plant can be found out. In order for the decorative grasses to have its roots firmly established in the ground the grass needs to be watered properly for a year, after which nature takes over .It is advisable to water the plants during drought. The best time for applying fertilizers to the plant is when growth starts during spring
The Ornamental grasses are not required to be cut down before winters. The foliage of the Ornamental grass helps to insulate the crown of the plants and they look very beautiful when not removed form the plant.
The Ornamental grasses may grow well in warm climate as well as cool seasons. There are some species which spread through runners while other grows in bunches. The ornamental grasses which grow during the cool season start to grow from early spring. There are some Ornamental grasses which remain green during the winter’s season also. These types of grass require more water than the grass that grows during the summer season. The grass which grow in the warm season can grow well in hot as well as dry climate but extensive trimming needs to be done for them The time of the year when the home garden is bare, growing the Ornamental grass as a filler to cover the home garden is a good idea which helps in beautifying the garden and the landscape.
