Amongst all the flowering shrubs Peonies are the perennials that have got a name for themselves because of their quality distinction which includes their enchanting sweet fragrance, longevity of continued production as well as their flowers which are as large as 5 to 7 inch. The peonies are the legacy of flowering shrubs and the epitome of cut flowers. Even after the blooming season is gone the home garden still looks very attractive because of the green foliage which makes it look like a beautiful centerpiece.
The Peonies need to be cultivated every spring and the soil in which it is planted needs to be well drained and rich. The home garden area where it is grown should be sunny and the plant should be able to get a minimum of 4 to 5 hours of sunlight everyday.
Peonies are plants which are in the style of a bush. Their longevity depends upon its variety. Some varieties are believed to last as long as a century and others for a lifetime. The blooms last for many weeks and flowers in different variations and ample range of colors as well as mixed colors can be seen during the early summers. As the blooms are heavy and the plant grows from 24 – 48 inches in height, they usually require staking if planted in a home garden
Many varieties of Peonies are there which captivate an array of colors in single as well as double blooms and both trees and bushes are included in it can be grown in the home garden. Bush Peonies or Herbaceous peony come in a wide range of colors which range from white and yellow to crimson and pink and many different shades of purple. The flowers start blooming from late April to early May and they last for many weeks. The noticeable factor about this plant is its thick full blooms which can be seen in many colors and shades in a single bloom.
Another variety of Peonies is the Tree peonies which is also called Peonia suffruiticosa . These Peonies come in huge variety of colors and can also survive for over hundred years with low maintenance. These Peonies are also known as “The Emperors Flowers “They are rare and very colorful and originated in China. These plants can produce more than 100 blooms which are about 10 inches across. In order to make the Peonies live for an indefinite period in a home garden they need to be planted in a well-drained loamy soil
The root of the Peonies plant needs to be cultivated in a well-drained as well as rich soil during winters or early spring. The trees need to be planted in loamy soil which has lots of organic matter and it should be planted at least about two feet deep. While planting it in a home garden some things need to be kept in mind like planting it near large trees should be avoided as the trees may absorb all the necessary nutrients and moisture. In order to grow new plants from the old ones cutting off sections of the root during early spring and planting it in a suitable place is done.
The Peonies do not require much maintenance. In order to keep the soil moist during spring mulch should be spread around the bushes. The bushes also need to be staked before the blooming season starts in early spring .
