The Phlox is an herbaceous plant which belongs to the genius Phlox and has about 65 species of plants which belong to the Polemoniaceae family. It is a plant which is a favorite of everyone whether grown in the wild or in the gardens, because of the clustered heads of flowers which makes it look beautiful. The main type of species of the Phlox plant that is grown in gardens is the creeping phlox and moss phlox. The moss Phlox is also sometimes known as moss pink or ground pink. The Phlox holds its origin to America.

The Creeping Phlox holds its origin to the Eastern woodland. They form broad mats of leaves as they spread very quickly. It is seen that wherever the stems of the creeping phlox give rise to new plants wherever the nodules touch the ground. The Creeping Phlox is generally used as a plant used for covering the ground as it grows not more than 6-12 inches high. The leaves of the Creeping Phlox are broad and oval and about 2inches across. They lie flat on the ground and are covered with fine soft hair which helps to form a carpet. The flowers of the Creeping Phlox are beautiful and usually in shades of purple or blue.
The Moss Phlox stay green all throughout the year in areas where the climate is mild. The Moss Phlox is used as a ground cover for the home garden as it forms dense mats of its leaves and also does not grow more than 6 inches tall. There are tiny needle like leaves make a thick covering over the stems and they have flowers in abundant quantity. As there are many varieties of moss phlox the range of varieties as well as colors of the flowers is also abundant. The flowers are either narrow, round notched or have star like petals. The color of the flower can either be lilac, pink, lavender, rose, blue or magenta. Some varieties of the Phlox plant are fragrant. Nowadays nurseries have ample of varieties of Phlox which are very attractive and showy as they are hybrids.
The Zones in which the Phlox plants are seen to grow are 3-8. A shady are is the best place to grow the Creeping phlox but if the area is party shady and partly light seeps then also it’s favorable for the plant. The soil where it is grown should be improved by adding leaf mold. The pH level of the soil should also be from 5.5 to 7.0. The other type of Phlox known as the Moss phlox can survive in any type of soil but the soil needs to be well drained and it also can tolerate full sunlight. The Phlox can be grown from seeds which are sown in spring or winters. They can also be got from plants which were planted in the nursery during autumn or spring and which have been kept at a distance of about 10 inches apart. The foliage can be cut after the flowering period is over in order to renew blooming or give rise to new growth.
